Jolie

The sun was high in the sky by the time I got up and came out onto the deck. It had been a long night of fucking in that tiny bed but I wasn’t complaining. I sat down at the little table he had on the back of his boat and watched the water. It was so serene being out here. Our phones were switched off but that didn’t mean shit when it came to tracking us. Amir may not have been able to do shit to us but our enemies could easily come out here and do something shady. The bag of weapons still sat on the deck from when we had escaped yesterday. Judging by the looks of it, he stole half the goddamn armory.

All I could hear were the sounds of birds circling above and around us, the little waves crashing against the bottom of the boat and that was it. There were no sirens, no cars, nothing to annoy me.

I was in bliss.

I heard Roman come up from the bedroom and sat down next to me. He turned to where our phones sat on the side table and tossed them over his shoulder. They sank quickly beneath the water.

“We don’t need them anymore,” he said. “We have burners.”

I didn’t care. I didn’t have anyone in my life I wanted to call anyway, but the loss of any communication did startle me for a brief moment.

“There’s someone coming,” I said as I looked out at the boat heading our way. My heart rate rose a little but Roman didn’t seem that worried.

“It’s Bennett.”

“How can you tell from this far away?” I asked him.

“The colors on the front of the boat. You can go down below if you don’t want to be up here.”

“No, I’m okay.”

He nodded and stood as the boat got closer. I could see Bennett’s red hair from here now and my panic subsided. I didn’t know him well but I did know from stories that he was the kinder of the Moreno men.

“Hey,” he shouted over at us. “I come with news.”

“Jump aboard,” Roman said, helping to pull the boat alongside ours. Bennett smiled at me softly before he turned back to Roman. “So, what do you have for us?”

“I brought some food and drink,” he said, pulling a bag off his back. “It’s not a lot but it’ll keep you satisfied for a few days before I can get more.”

“Thank you,” I said, taking the bag from him and moving to put it away downstairs. Bennett waited for me to be gone before he spoke again. I could still hear him but I could tell he didn’t want me to be with them up there.

“What is it?” Roman asked him.

“Amir is on the warpath and your father has disowned you, publicly stating the fact. Your mother has left Verona but she tells me she is safe and with her family. The Caldwell’s are furious and pleading with everyone for the return of Jolie, saying you kidnapped her and putting an even bigger target on your back.
